The movie with any real street cred coming out this weekend is Hail Cesar!, the latest offering from the Coen Brothers. It looks hysterical, and should be head and shoulders above the other two wide releases coming out this weekend. One of them is a new Nicholas Sparks film called The Choice. For me, the choice is easy, since I literally couldn’t make it through the trailer for this movie, I certainly am not going to waste 2 hours and $10 on it. The other wide release is Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. You can almost imagine how the conversation around the title of this movie cam about, right? “What should we call it?”…. “I dunno, what’s it about?”… “It’s like, Pride and Prejudice, only with Zombies”… “Ok, let’s just call it that…”
So the winner of the newbies looks to be (at least I hope) Hail Cesar!. However the largest Coen brothers opening weekend didn’t break $25 million (True Grit: $24.8 million) so the question is, does it have what it takes to topple last weeks big winner Kung Fu Panda 3, which opened with $41.2 million.
Here is my wildly unscientific and probably inaccurate box office predictions:
- Kung Fu Panda 3, $30 million
- Hail Caesar!, $20 million
- The Revenant, $10 million
- Star Wars, $8.5 million
- The Finest Hours, $8.5 million
Of course the choice could squeak in there, or really anything else could happen.
